5G Roboter

The 5G model region, which is headed by the Institute for Wireless Communication and Navigation at the TU Kaiserslautern, aims to evaluate the performance of 5G technology as well as its advantages in various technical applications from the areas of logistics, cooperating autonomous machines and vehicles, event technology, production, transportation and agriculture. For this purpose, several 4G and 5G campus networks as well as indoor networks are implemented, which are intended to emulate both private campus networks and public networks. In addition, the use of portable 4G / 5G network solutions in various sizes is planned and tested.
With the most realistic setup, operation and use, the test networks can also serve as a prototype for other regions. To optimize the networks, it is necessary to enable constant monitoring of the network parameters and performance, as well as to ensure an individual configuration of the networks in order to realistically realize the quality of the connections, the data rate or the load.


The Robotics Research Lab, together with other partners, is responsible for the use of 5G technology on different robots. A broadband transfer of state information in real time (e.g. detailed description of the current environment of the robot) could significantly simplify the perception problem for other systems. In addition, the permanent exchange of environmental information can significantly increase safety, especially when operating autonomous mobile robots. Using the example of indoor and outdoor transport systems (e.g. for mail, food), a first aid robot and special agricultural robots, the advantage of using 5G technology in robot applications will be investigated.
